How we test water tracker apps

What we install, what we check, and where every fact on this site comes from.

Updated November 2, 2026 ยท Apps checked November 2, 2026

Every review on this site starts with a fresh install. We do not copy feature lists from app store pages.

What we install on

  • An iPhone with the current iOS.
  • An Android phone with the current Android, and an emulator for a second check.

We start each app as a new user, without signing in where we can, and use the free version first.

What we check in every app

  1. The store listing: price, in-app purchases, "Contains ads", rating and number of ratings.
  2. The first launch: how many onboarding steps, whether a paywall comes before you can use the app, and whether you can close it.
  3. Logging water: how many taps it takes and which cup sizes you get.
  4. Logging other drinks, such as coffee, tea or juice: whether it is free and whether it counts differently from water.
  5. Reminders: whether they work in the free version.
  6. The paywall: every plan, its price and the free trial.
  7. Ads: every ad we see, what kind and when it shows up. If we see none after ten minutes of use, we write that down too.
  8. Stats and history: what the free version shows and what is locked.
  9. Friends and sharing: whether the app has them and what they do.
  10. Apple Health, Health Connect, Apple Watch and widgets.
  11. Coins, plants, pets and other rewards: how you earn them and whether ads are part of it.

Where the facts come from

Every price, limit and ad on this site comes from one of two places: the app's store listing on the date we checked it, or a screenshot from our own install. Prices in US dollars come from the US App Store and Google Play. The date at the top of each page says when we last checked the apps on it.

How often we update

We check the apps in our ranking again every four to six weeks, and a review again when an app changes its prices or its free version. The date at the top of the page changes only when a fact on the page changes.

Our own app

We make Waltermelon, and it is one of the apps we review. It goes through the same checklist. Its review lists what it does not have, such as an Apple Watch app.

Corrections

If a price changed or we got something wrong, write to support@waltermelon.app. We check and fix it, and the date at the top of the page changes.

Questions

Do app makers pay to be reviewed or ranked here?

No. Nobody pays to be on this site, and we have no affiliate links.

You make Waltermelon. Why should I trust your reviews?

We say so on every page that rates apps, we review Waltermelon with the same checklist, and we list its downsides too. Every fact links back to a store listing or a screenshot from our own install, so you can check it yourself.
